Our 6th annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk was held on Saturday, October 3rd at Battery Park in Burlington, VT. A total of 154 walkers walked from Battery Park, down Church Street and up to the UVM green and back to the park, wearing bright blue T-shirts, and some with team T-shirts. Each walker carried a carnation with a poem in memory of their loved ones lost to suicide. Funds raised totaled $22,000 and will help the American Foundation for Suicide support such things as 80 active research projects; distribute More than Sad: Teen Depression (AFSP's new film to educate high school students about depression and getting help); increase the number of colleges using the Interactive Screening Program; educate physicians and medical students to recognize depression; and expand an outreach program for recently bereaved to offer support.
Speakers at the opening ceremony included Kimberly Gleason, Eastern Division Director of AFSP; Brian Remer, Project Manager of VT Youth Suicide Prevention Coalition, who introduced the Umatter campaign for building community-wide strategies that focus on strength-based prevention and positive youth development; and Anissa DeLauri of Rutland, a survivor of a suicide loss.
